A ceiling fan is heavier than a light, and it moves. The box in the ceiling has to be rated to hold a fan. A box put in for a light only can pull loose. We check the box before the fan goes up. If the box has to be changed, that is part of the price, and we will say so before we start.

What to have ready

• Whether a fan is already there, or you are replacing a light.
• The room: bedroom, living room, or a vaulted ceiling.
• Whether you already bought the fan, and if it includes a light kit.
• A wobble, a hum, or a fan that stopped. Those can be the hanger, the blades, or the wiring.

The cost page lists a typical range for a fan on a box that is already rated for one. A new support box costs more. A fan over a stair, or one that needs a new switch leg, is priced after we see it. If the canopy sparked or smells hot, leave the breaker off and use the emergency page.
